Summary:

The following presentation highlights the necessity of participation of the local community in governance in order to ensure the community's rights. Through these movements at the community level, collective action and community empowerment are achieved, and communities gain the power to demand their rights. The presentation presents local development cases in Brazil as a co-production of communities, and the private sector and NGOs play an influential role in pushing these communities to become self-sustainable. The following presentation underscores the importance of participation, especially in the context of democratic, participatory governance that calls for collective action of social change. The presentation also highlights some of the challenges associated with creating an ecosystem for SSE in Brazil.
