Summary

A transformation of the socio-economic structure has been taking place in Korea since the 1990s. In response to structural changes, two kinds of alternatives have emerged. The first one focuses on community building in local towns. The second one focuses the social economy and specifically introducing a legal system to foster its development. Although community building and the social economy have both had a huge growth in numbers, both sectors have been faced with criticism regarding their qualitative growth, for example regarding their sustainability. To overcome this situation, Gyeonggi-do, the largest local government in Korea proposes the development of a system of governance for the convergence of the social economy and community building projects.
