Summary:

In Benin, food prepared and sold on the street has become an increasingly important component of the local diet, due to the faster pace of life and the migration of the villagers to urban centres. Cheap and convenient, this food has become an indispensable part of urban and rural diets. However, these foods also entail risks. The food stalls often lack necessary storage, refrigeration and cooking facilities to avoid bacterial contamination and a lack of attention to hygiene and to waste disposal may turn a street food stall into a source of food poisoning. In order to solve this major public health problem, MamaCarts Bénin implemented a safe street food program based on the social and solidarity economy.
